Barbara Alexander, MD, MHS
Barbara D. Alexander, MD, MHS is Professor of Medicine and Pathology, Director of Transplant Infectious Disease Services at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina where she completed internal medicine residency, infectious diseases and medical microbiology fellowships and obtained a Masters in Health Science in Clinical Research. Dr Alexander is Past President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and she served as Associate Deputy Editor for the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal and Chair of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute Subcommittee on Antifungal Tests. She is a National Institutes of Health-funded researcher whose efforts have led to standardized methods for susceptibility testing and interpretive breakpoints and epidemiologic cutoff values for fungi and FDA approval of new diagnostic tests and antimicrobials agents. She has participated in pivotal national epidemiologic investigations of infections in transplant and immunocompromised host populations. Dr. Alexander has lectured nationally and internationally, has authored over 200 articles, book chapters, white papers and publications for mass distribution, and is considered a thought leader in the field of transplant ID.
