Part 1 Assessment of Clinical Learners - The Basics

This online module is for clinical faculty, fellows, residents, or anyone teaching in the clinical learning environment who have the responsibility of assessing and evaluating students. It covers direct observation, assessment, filling in evaluation forms, and rater training.  

Target Audience

This course is for clinical faculty, fellows, residents, or anyone teaching in the clinical learning environment who will be observing, assessing, and evaluating students.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, participants should be able to: 

  • Discuss the rationale for direct observation of clinical skills
  • Describe  a stepwise approach to doing direct observation
  • Describe how multiple feedback on student performance contributes to the student’s final evaluation and grade for clerkship
  • Explain factors that lead to low-quality assessments and strategies to overcome them
