Moving Beyond Bystanding...to Disrupting Racism

This course is part of the GW Anti-Racism Coalition educational series.  

This isn’t your typical bystander training. Bystanders address individual feelings- and its personal impact- in the moment. But, what happens if the bystander does not recognize a comment as a microaggression or a decision as reflecting racial bias? Nothing changes. But even if they do recognize and report it, the systems that currently exist largely produce, if not maintain, racism.

This is why we call for ‘Moving beyond Bystanding…to Disrupting Racism”. In this course, we will give examples of what this looks like. We are calling for disruptors who will address institutional values alongside personal ones to change racist culture, policies, and practices.

Target Audience

This training is designed for everyone- students, faculty, staff, researchers, administrators, and clinicians. No matter what role you have, this training will allow for you to recognize your responsibility in contributing to an antiracist institutional culture.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, participants will be able to : 

  • Identify how positions of power and privilege operate in taken for granted ways
  • Recognize characteristics and challenges of being a bystander in the face of racism
  • Recognize characteristics and challenges of being a disrupter in the face of racism
  • Apply the D.I.S.R.U.P.T model to common academic scenarios
