Introduction to Health Services Research

An Introduction to Health Services Research has been designed for clinicians interested in developing the skills necessary to engage in health services research (HSR). Learners will be introduced to HSR conceptual models in a learning health system, designing a research trajectory, quantitative, qualitative and mixed- method methodologies, community-based research strategies, ethical considerations in HSR, utilization of big data/EMR, funding mechanisms as well as writing and dissemination. Each of the eight lessons incorporate case studies, lectures, readings and discussions with experts. Upon completion of this course, learners will have the knowledge and skills to begin their personal health services research line of inquiry.

Target Audience

This course is designed for healthcare providers including MD, PA, NP, nurses, rehabilitation specialists (OT, PT, SLP), public health professionals, pharmacists as well as researchers. In addition, students and community members who are interested in health services research are able to participate in this course.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you, will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of various research designs (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods) and methodologies used in health services research.
  • Adhere to ethical principles in conducting health services research, including obtaining informed consent and ensuring confidentiality.
  • Develop skills necessary to complete the funding process for health services research (write effective grant proposals, identify potential funding sources, and understand the grant application process)
  • Apply health services research to advance health equity.
  • Effectively communicate the findings and implications of health services research
  • Integrate disciplinary knowledge and skills relevant to a health services research agenda.
