Optimizing Opioid Prescribing for Chronic Pain in Sickle Cell Disease

OVERVIEW: 

This 1.5 CE virtual asynchronous learning activity aims to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to optimize opioid prescribing practices, especially in the setting of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). It focuses on identifying and mitigating risk categories associated with opioid use, with particular attention to opioid diversion abuse, and the utilization of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs). Through the course the learner will engage in didactic lectures, patient cases, and knowledge checks.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dentists, and allied health professionals practicing across the continuum of care. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

1. Summarize the key aspects of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)

2. Examine the pharmacology and apply opioid dosing strategies used for the management of SCD.

3. Describe the 2022 CDC guidelines and the 2020 ASH Guidelines in the use of opioids for chronic and acute pain management and evaluate opioid alternatives for chronic pain management with particular emphasis on SCD.

4. Apply the principles of responsible opioid prescribing by identifying risk factors for misuse, utilizing Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) effectively, and recognizing and responding to signs of diversion and abuse to minimize patient risk.
