From Spreadsheet to Story: A Step-By-Step Guide To Communicating Data

The ability to tell a story with data is more important that ever, and in the data-rich field of healthcare, it has only become more important. From health care providers to public health and government officials, data literacy is a skill that can create new value for you and your organization.

Through five modules, class participants will build out their own data story using data customized to locations of their choosing, and the course will also provide a toolkit of resources to help participants integrate learnings from this class into their professional work.

Throughout the training, we’ll gain inspiration from health data stories created by highly regarded data visualization professionals, and we’ll learn how to apply data visualization to various types of health information, from disease prevalence and health economics to the social determinants of health and health care quality.

Learners who purchase the full course package will have the option to engage in LIVE office hours with the course instructor, which will be held once per quarter.

This course and registration are being offered by the George Washington University Center for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (CEHP).

The five individual modules are:

  1. Module One: A Conversation With Susan Dentzer
  2. Module Two: The Basics Of Visualization
  3. Module Three: Finding The Right Presentation Format
  4. Module Four: Lessons Learned In Communicating Data Effectively

ANDY KRACKOV

Module Instructor - Hillcrest Advisory

Andy Krackov’s career has focused on the intersection of data and community-level action. His consultancy, Hillcrest Advisory, works with social sector organizations on the front lines of local change to help them communicate numbers effectively and tell stories with data, in order to transform facts into impact.

At the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health, Andy helped launch and manage that foundation’s kidsdata.org initiative, which leverages local data as a tool to bring attention to children’s issues across California. At the California Health Care Foundation (CHCF), Andy partnered with the State of California to build a nation-leading open data program to publish, and encourage use of, the valuable health data the state provides. Prior to establishing Hillcrest Advisory, Andy also was vice president for data strategy at the digital agency Velir and previously served as Vice President for Partnerships and Strategy at the data storytelling startup, LiveStories.
