Herbert L. DuPont, MD, holds the Distinguished Mary W. Kelsey Chair in the Medical Sciences at the University of Texas Medical School, Professor of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology at the University of Texas – Houston School of Public Health. Additionally he holds faculty appointments at the Professor level at Baylor College of Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center and University of Houston School of Pharmacy, and the Graduate Schools of Biomedical Sciences at University of Texas and Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. DuPont received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Ohio Wesleyan University and his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine training at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Maryland. He served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He has received honorary doctorates from the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and from Ohio Wesleyan University.

Dr. DuPont served as president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and was the first President of the International Society of Travel Medicine. He served on the Board of Governors for the American College of Physicians (ACP) and served as ACP Governor for south Texas.

He serves on the Editorial Board of Medical Journals in Infectious Diseases and Gastroenterology. He has served on the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee of the FDA and the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at the CDC. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.

In 2006, Dr. DuPont received the Distinguished Achievement Citation from Ohio Wesleyan University and in 2009 the Distinguished Medical Achievement Award from Emory University School of Medicine. In 2007, he received the Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. He was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians in 2008. In 2009, he received the President’s Scholar Award for Research, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and in 2015, he was given the Regents Award for Teaching Excellence along with the title of “Distinguished Teaching Professor” from the University of Texas System. In 2010, he received the Alexander Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievements in Infectious Diseases from the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He has authored or co-authored 758 scientific publications (402 original science publications and 356 reviews or book chapters) and written or edited 19 books.
