Claiming CME Credit 

As a medical educator, you can earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ (CME credit) for your own professional development.

Types of Teaching Activities

Physician preceptors/faculty members may claim credit for a variety of interactions. Types of teaching activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Formal presentations to medical students, residents;
  • Development of cases, clinical problems;
  • Supervising clinical or simulated activities;
  • Instruction on clinical or other skills;
  • Assessing learner performance (clinical or simulation settings);
  • Mentoring other scholarly activities.


Guidelines for Receiving Credit

  • The process applies only to teaching medical students and/or residents/fellows in GW's ACGME approved programs.
  • Learning must be paired with teaching. You must engage in some new learning that you then apply to
  • If you teach the same content on more than one occasion, even to a different audience, you may claim credit only once. However, whenever you undertake new learning, even on a previous topic, that becomes a new learning-teaching combination eligible for credit.
  • Educational materials used to prepare for teaching cannot be materials or activities developed by an ACCME-defined commercial interest.
  • A maximum of 30 CME credits (for 15 hours of teaching) will be provided per person per calendar year.
  • The course(s) described must not have occurred prior to 7/1/17.
