Biography:

Dr. Banerjee is an Assistant Professor of Neurology in the Stroke Division at Medical University of South Carolina.
He graduated from medical school at B.J. Medical College, Gujarat University in India in 2008. He then attended graduate school at Columbia University, NY, where he studied Epidemiology and worked under Dr. Mitchell Elkind and Dr. Ralph Sacco at the Northern Manhattan Stroke Study (NOMAS), which is a multiethnic population based prospective stroke cohort, where he studied Diabetes as a time-varying covariate and its relation to incident stroke risk, as well as duration of diabetes as a risk factor for stroke.
He completed Neurology residency as well as Vascular neurology fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Goldberg and Mark Alberts. During residency and stroke fellowship, his research focus was on management and outcomes among patients with uncommon causes of stroke, such as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis(CVST), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and dural AV fistula. He studied the indications, practice patterns and patient outcomes among patients with CVST who undergo endovascular intervention.
He joined the Stroke division at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC in 2015. At MUSC, he has published several peer reviewed papers, written review articles, authored an editorial for JAMA Neurology, as well as written chapters for stroke textbooks. His work has been well cited with ~600 citations. His focus at MUSC has been studying outcomes after stroke and ICH associated with sickle cell disease under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Adams, as well as studying process, care delivery, risk factors and outcomes among patients treated via stroke telemedicine. He is principal/sub-investigator for several StrokeNet and industry clinical trials at MUSC. He is Program Director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program, and Medical Director, Inpatient Quality, Neurosciences at MUSC. Apart from providing clinical care to patients at our academic Comprehensive Stroke Center in Charleston, he also treats acute stroke patients at >30 telestroke partner sites in South Carolina via our telestroke platform.
